All SUV models: from city crossovers to off-road vehicles

Nowadays, SUVs come in all colours, shapes and sizes - and for every purpose. What does the abbreviation SUV actually mean? The English term Sports Utility Vehicle suggests a focus on function. Within the vehicle category SUV there is another subcategory: the so-called Crossover Utility Vehicles (CUVs).

As the name suggests, a crossover is a mixture: These cars only have the visual characteristics of an off-road vehicle - the driving characteristics are those of a passenger car. Opel offers different models for every need, such as the Opel Frontera. The Opel Frontera is perfect for an urban lifestyle. The Crossover with modern SUV design and numerous technical innovations is a highlight in its class.

Compact SUVs like the Mokka and Frontera are ideal for everyday use. Models like the Grandland are real all-rounders. The vehicles can have 4x4 four-wheel drive or an adaptive traction system and ensure optimum grip on any surface. But first and foremost, they are made to hold their own in the city. Perhaps the biggest plus point is the raised seating which means you always have everything in view. Compact SUVs are suitable as family and city cars.

On the other hand, all-terrain vehicles are perfectly suited for driving over sand dunes, gravel roads and through deep mud thanks to four-wheel drive, high ground clearance, underride protection and other off-road features.

Spacious, flexible, comfortable: suvs are simply everyday champions

Times are changing in the car industry. Increasingly, people are switching into SUVs like the Opel Mokka and Grandland because they’re spacious and comfortable. But there’s more to it than that: the sporty design and the obvious driving pleasure are as important to many as the generous space and unique flexibility. And it’s precisely this flexibility that makes SUVs ideal for families. The spacious and ergonomic interior offers space for a family of up to three children – without compromising on legroom.

Pets are family members too and need to be taken into consideration because they can’t be left behind: the spacious boot offers plenty of space for dogs or cats. Opel offers plenty of special accessories to equip your SUV for driving with pets. For example, the load compartment partition grid separates the passenger area from the boot, thus increasing safety for all passengers – and keeping dirt and mess to a minimum.

But the large load compartment offers you many more possibilities. Big supermarket shops are a cinch with an SUV: for those with small children, there’s also plenty of space for prams, weekend shopping and crates of beer. The Opel Frontera, for example, has a very large load capacity in its class at 460 litres – and the boot area can be flexibly expanded to an impressive 1,600 litres.

Be prepared for a lot of luggage when travelling or just a trip to go shopping. An Opel SUV gives you exactly the flexibility you need.

For optimum driving in every situation, many SUVs today have intelligent driver assistance systems. Switch easily between rear-wheel, front-wheel and all-wheel drive - and stay in control. When it comes to driving pleasure, SUVs have another advantage: a longer wheelbase and the resulting better overview. When you can see all the way to the horizon, you get a refreshing feeling of freedom.

The Ultimate off-roaders: SUV models with all-wheel drive

With an Opel SUV you can experience the comfort of a passenger car - combined with the robust power and assertiveness of an off-road vehicle.

Mud, sand, gravel, snow, ice and rain. These are the driving moments that demand a lot from your SUV. So it’s good to know you have a car with 4x4 four-wheel drive that you can rely on 100 percent.

Forget the tough stuff. Even on easy terrain, a 4x4 (four-wheel-drive) guarantees ultimate driving pleasure without losing any of its dynamics. Why? This sort of drive system puts the power where it belongs: namely via each individual wheel directly onto the road - not just to the front or rear wheels. The advantage: grip on almost any surface.
